Talk to one. Hold the Talk button on any bodycam's tile and your voice plays on the wearer's loudspeaker. Half-duplex, like a radio: while you speak, their microphone mutes itself, then returns the moment you release. No phone call, no second app, no number to dial.

Broadcast to a mile. Watching one officer and need everyone around them? Hold Broadcast: the system takes that unit's live GPS position and sends your voice to every unit within a mile of it — chosen at the moment you press, from live positions, with an on-screen count of exactly how many units are receiving.

Evidence-grade, through dead zones.

Cellular coverage is not a promise anyone can keep — stairwells, basements, steel structures and rural roads all take a bodycam off the network. The question is never whether the signal drops. It is what the footage can prove afterwards.

When the network goes, the Bodycam app keeps recording locally and uploads the moment signal returns. That much is table stakes. What matters in a hearing is the arithmetic that comes with it: every segment carries a hash calculated on the device, and the segments are numbered contiguously.

So a missing segment is visible as a missing number. A recording that stopped and never mentioned it is the failure mode that loses cases, and it is the one thing this design refuses to allow. This is a buffer that uploads itself — not an end-of-shift card pull that depends on someone remembering to dock the unit.

  • Records through the gap — capture continues on the device the whole time it is off the network.
  • Hashed on the device — each segment's fingerprint is computed before it ever leaves the camera.
  • Contiguous sequence numbers — the upload arrives in order, and holes announce themselves.
  • Dropped segments are provable, never silent — you can state exactly what is missing instead of hoping nothing is.
  • Uploads catch up automatically — no docking station, no card reader, no end-of-shift ritual.

Whose camera was it? Answered at shift start.

Officers check in at the beginning of a shift with their name and badge as declared on the device. Everything that camera captures for that shift is attributed to the officer who was wearing it — recorded at the time, not reconstructed from a duty roster months later when someone asks who held the camera. Attribution is a field on the footage, not an argument.

Chain of custody, tamper-evident audit, redaction, legal holds and exports that opposing counsel can verify offline are the Evidence Management add-on — built for the courtroom, and it treats body-worn footage as a first-class source.

Event mode — in the Bodycam app

Say the words you'd already say.

This mode doesn't wait for a button. The camera listens on the device — and the phrases that trigger it are the ones that come out of your mouth anyway when something goes wrong.

Nobody under stress remembers a code word. "SOS" and "mark incident" are the built-in phrases — the recognizer's vocabulary is locked to exactly those two, so it physically cannot transcribe anything else you say. Saying them IS pressing the button: the moment is marked, recording is triggered, and an SOS phrase raises the same alert as holding the SOS button — operator screen, webhook, email. (Custom organization phrases — "I need backup," "call 911" — are next on the roadmap.)

Behind the voice cues sits an event-driven recording mode: the camera runs armed but silent, holding the last two minutes in a rolling buffer. A gunshot-like bang, breaking glass, shouting, a door forced open, a fall or violent shake — any of these trips it. The two minutes before the trigger and two minutes after upload immediately; recording continues until an operator stands it down or the scene goes quiet. All detection runs on the phone — no audio leaves the device except as recorded evidence, and a visible notification shows whenever the camera is armed.

And the part your data plan will notice: in this mode the camera streams nothing. Mobile data is spent only on event footage — live view comes up only when an operator actually opens the camera, and tears itself down when they look away. The same discipline our edge recorders already run, applied to a camera that walks.

  • A fixed vocabulary, on purpose — the recognizer only knows its command phrases — "SOS" (spoken or spelled), "mark incident", "start recording", "end recording" — and physically cannot transcribe conversation. Custom organization phrases are next.
  • Two minutes of hindsight — a rolling pre-event buffer means the trigger never costs you the lead-up.
  • Sound-aware — gunshot-family bangs, breaking glass, shouting and doors, detected with the same model family as our fixed-camera gunshot detection.
  • Fall & shake detection — an officer-down signature from the phone's own sensors.
  • Evidence uploads itself — the event window ships to the cloud immediately, hashed and sequence-numbered like every bodycam segment.
  • Zero streaming data until watched — live view on demand only; no always-on stream burning the data plan.

The app installs as a signed APK from your own deployment's downloads page, so it works on hardened builds without Google Play; TETRA voice is untouched, and the LTE side carries the video. Check-in at shift start still answers "whose camera was it," and the SOS cue raises the same alert as the radio's own emergency button.

Airbus Tactilon Dabat

The first full TETRA radio and smartphone in one device — 4.7" screen, front and rear cameras, IP65/67, and designed by Airbus to be worn on the lapel capturing video. That is this app's use case in hardware form. Early units run older Android; per-unit verification applies.

A tri-mode TETRA + LTE emergency handheld aimed at emergency management, rail transit and airports, with external sensor interfaces. Compact enough to be carried as a dedicated wearable camera-radio where a full-size portable is too much.

  • The Android app streams with the screen off and in the background. Provisioning sets the one-time battery-optimization exclusion the phone brand needs — one step on the rollout checklist we run with you.
  • After a device reboot, Android asks the wearer for a single tap to bring the camera back up — a platform rule that applies to every app on the phone, and one line on the shift-start checklist.
  • Plan the data and the power: roughly 0.5–1 GB per streamed hour at typical quality, and a power bank or dock for long shifts. Event mode streams nothing until an operator opens the camera, which is how fleets keep both budgets small.
  • Operator talkback reaches the Axis camera app and the Nevtech Bodycam app (v1.2.0+): hold Talk on the camera's tile and your voice plays on the phone's loudspeaker — half-duplex, the phone's mic mutes while you speak. Keep the phone's media volume up. On third-party body cameras, the device's own PTT/speaker stays on the device.
  • Live streaming carries full audio end to end. Segments captured while the device is off the network are video; if recorded sound through dead zones is a requirement for your program, tell us when you book a demo.

Which body cameras work?

Any body-worn camera with a 4G/LTE radio that can push an RTSP stream with a username and password — a capability most current 4G models advertise. We don't sell hardware and we don't lock you to a brand: tell us the model you're considering and we'll verify it against a real account before you commit to a fleet.

Is there an iPhone app?

The app is Android, free, and runs on any Android 8.0+ phone — including the rugged handsets and TETRA radios above. If iOS matters to your deployment, tell us when you book a demo: the roadmap is shaped by exactly that kind of signal.

How secure is the stream?

Encrypted in transit (TLS), authenticated with credentials minted for that one device, revocable per device without touching the rest of your fleet. Once footage lands, it's governed by the same permissions, retention and audit trail as every other camera in your account.

What does the event-driven mode cost?

Nothing extra — it's a mode of the same Bodycam app, on the same per-camera price. No separate SKU for using less data. Trigger sensitivity is tuned with us per deployment during onboarding, so the detectors match your environment instead of a lab's — the gunshot head arrives already trained on real recordings. Can an operator talk to the officer?

Yes — hold the Talk button on the camera's tile and your voice plays on the wearer's loudspeaker (Bodycam app v1.2.0+, a free update). It's half-duplex like a radio: while you speak, the wearer's microphone mutes itself, then returns when you release. The wearer needs their media volume up — worth adding to your shift checklist. Can we see where everyone is?

Yes — every mobile unit's live position shows on the map and as named dots on the video tile, visible to everyone in your organization, not just supervisors. A position older than three minutes goes grey rather than pretending to be live, and movement trails are kept for seven days. One deliberate rule: locations are shared org-wide, but watching a unit's video still follows each user's camera permissions — the dot shares where a colleague is, never their footage.

Can the person wearing it turn it off?

Physically, yes — it's their device and the law in many places requires that ability. What the platform gives you is visibility: a mobile camera shows online/offline on the wall like any camera, gaps are visible in the timeline, and everything streamed up to that moment is already in the cloud and can't be deleted from the device.

How does a body camera with live 4G streaming work?

The Nevtech bodycam runs on a rugged Android handset with its own 4G connection: on shift it streams live video and GPS position to the console, an operator can talk back through the wearer’s speaker, and SOS reaches the control room instantly with location. In dead zones the camera keeps recording locally and uploads fingerprinted footage when signal returns — a coverage gap is a pause in streaming, never a hole in the record.
